The fall 2017 retrospective at The Met Breuer, Modernism on the Ganges: Raghubir Singh Photographs, will exhibit the works of the pioneer of colour street photography Raghubir Singh, situating his photographic work at the intersection of Western modernism and traditional South Asian modes of picturing the world. It will feature 85 photographs by Singh in counterpoint with the work of his contemporaries—friends, collaborators, fellow travelers—and with examples of Indian court painting styles that inspired him. The exhibition is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art with the cooperation of Succession Raghubir Singh. Raghubir Singh worked and published prolifically from the late 1960s until his death in 1999 at age 56. Born into an aristocratic family in Rajasthan, Singh resided in Hong Kong, Paris, London, and New York—but his lifelong subject was his native India. The exhibition will trace the full trajectory of Singh’s career from his early work as a photojournalist in the late 1960s through his last unpublished projects of the late 1990s. Using a handheld camera and color slide film, he recorded India’s dense milieu in complex frieze-like compositions, teeming with incident, fractured by reflections, and pulsating with opulent color. Singh forged a distinctively Indian style of modernist photography that stands, as he put it, “on the Ganges side of modernism, rather than the Seine or East River side of it.” The exhibit will be held from October 11, 2017 to January 2, 2018. The exhibition will be featured on the Museum’s website, as well as on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter using the hashtag #RaghubirSingh and #MetBreuer.

Reebok has announced a partnership with Huntsman Savile Row in which the two iconic brands will collaborate on a one-of- a-kind project, Reebok x Huntsman, creating a prototype suit using Reebok’s exclusive new Flexweave material that was originally designed for footwear. Flexweave is a versatile textile that can be produced using an unlimited array of fabrics. The Huntsman prototype suit created through Reebok Flexweave will feature the material’s innovative figure-8 weave structure that can interlock different individual fibers. Led by Huntsman Head Cutter and Creative Director Campbell Carey, Huntsman will take the first generation of Flexweave material designed for footwear and curate the textile into a premium suit. Reebok and Huntsman will work together over the coming months to develop the unique garment, made-to-measure for Reebok ambassador and superstar football WR Brandin Cooks.

Nike’s newest, recently unveiled Tennis Classic debuted a revolutionary, brand new material created by the brand itself—Flyleather. It is supposedly an environment friendly material and stronger than natural full-grain leather. Flyleather rescues the scraps from leather cutting (of which up to 30% of the hide is lost) and transforms it into fibers that are then mixed half and half with other synthetic fibers in a pressurized hydro process, making it more consistent than natural leather in thickness and pigmentation. And though the look and feel is just like premium full-grain leather, it uses 90% less water to produce and results in an 80% lower carbon footprint compared to traditional leather manufacturing. Not only is it 40% lighter than traditional leather, it is also five times more durable.

In the age when we’re seeking eco-friendly alternatives to everything, why should the grand chandelier be left behind? Julian Melchiorri, London based designer and leading biochemical technology researcher, has come up with a unique innovative and also gorgeous looking chandelier that’s filled with algae, which constantly purify the air inside your room! Termed the ‘Exhale Chandelier’,  it comes in a special bionic-leaf format that uses basic photosynthesis to convert Carbon dioxide into oxygen, and can be used both indoors and outdoors. An artificial leaf system stores live algae between glass structures that can be configured into designs using various forms and shapes. Currently on display at the V&A museum for the London Design week, this chandelier sure is a “breath of fresh air”!
